Norovirus Cases Hit Record Highs
29 Jan
Summary
- Norovirus cases fill 950 hospital beds, a new winter high.
- Hospitals face sustained pressure from viruses and other demands.
- Vaccination efforts increased to combat seasonal viruses.

Hospitals in England are currently experiencing significant pressure due to a surge in winter viruses, with norovirus cases reaching a new high for the season. Last week, 950 hospital beds were occupied by patients exhibiting symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, marking a 15% increase from the prior week and exceeding last year's figures at this time. Projections suggest these numbers may surpass February's peak of 961 occupied beds from the previous winter.
While the number of hospital patients with flu has fallen from its recent peak, and Covid-19 cases remain relatively low, NHS national medical director Professor Meghana Pandit highlighted the sustained pressure on healthcare facilities. She commended staff for their efforts in managing winter challenges, noting improvements in ambulance handover times and a reduction in flu cases compared to previous years, partly attributed to a significant increase in vaccinations delivered.
Professor Pandit emphasized that seasonal viruses are causing ongoing disruption and consuming hospital resources, with norovirus cases tripling since the start of the month. She advised the public on preventing the spread of norovirus through frequent handwashing and remaining symptom-free for 48 hours before returning to public spaces or work.
