Ireland is experiencing a sharp rise in norovirus cases, with a 54% increase observed in the week ending February 7, bringing the total to 86. This significant surge in the winter vomiting bug, known for causing vomiting and diarrhea, is placing additional pressure on health services.
The HSE reports that 676 cases have occurred this winter season. Notably, a concerning 59% of the cases reported in the week ending February 7 were in individuals aged 65 and older. While typically mild for many, norovirus can be serious for the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions.
Health officials are strongly advising individuals with norovirus symptoms to isolate at home for 48 hours, avoiding work, school, and social gatherings. They also recommend avoiding visits to hospitals and nursing homes. Strict hygiene measures, including frequent hand washing with soap and water, thorough cleaning of contaminated surfaces, and avoiding raw produce, are essential to prevent transmission.
