Non-Surgical Knee Treatment Dissolves Away Pain
24 Oct
Summary
- Dissolvable gelatin particles block excess knee blood vessels.
- 80% of patients saw pain relief lasting over a year.
- Procedure offers alternative to knee replacement surgery.

A new minimally invasive procedure offers lasting pain relief for individuals suffering from knee osteoarthritis. Known as genicular artery embolization (GAE), this treatment utilizes dissolvable gelatin particles to temporarily block excess blood vessels around the knee. These extra vessels contribute to inflammation and nerve irritation, causing significant pain.
The GAE procedure reduces these issues by selectively clogging these problematic vessels. Because the gelatin particles dissolve over time, no foreign material is left behind. Researchers found that 80% of 194 study participants reported substantial pain reduction lasting for at least one year. The treatment also led to notable improvements in daily mobility and overall quality of life.
While promising, researchers note limitations, including the absence of a control group and a one-year follow-up period. The procedure does not reverse structural joint damage or rebuild cartilage. Larger trials are currently underway to further validate these findings and assess the long-term effectiveness and potential need for repeat treatments.
