NJ Parks Closed Amid Bird Flu Fears
18 Feb
Summary
- Two New Jersey parks closed due to suspected bird flu cases.
- Canadian geese in Pitman show presumed signs of avian flu.
- Health officials urge vigilance and reporting of sick birds.

Two adjacent parks in Pitman, New Jersey, Alcyon Park and Betty Park, have been closed indefinitely. This action comes after health officials confirmed multiple suspected cases of H5N1 bird flu within the state.
Canadian geese near Alcyon Lake in Pitman have presumed cases of the avian flu. This follows similar presumed cases identified elsewhere in New Jersey.
Emergency management is increasing bird monitoring to swiftly detect further outbreaks. Residents are advised to watch for sick or deceased birds and report sightings to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection or local animal control.
Earlier this year, bird flu was also detected in a poultry flock in Delaware's Kent County. Bird flu symptoms in birds can range from cold-like signs to sudden death, and in humans, symptoms can include pink eye, fever, and respiratory issues.
