Two nurses in Kolkata have been admitted to the Beliaghata ID Hospital after exhibiting symptoms consistent with Nipah virus infection. These healthcare professionals were involved in the care of a fellow worker who tested positive for the virus at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.
One of the newly admitted nurses arrived late on January 13, while the second, a house staff member, was transferred from Burdwan early on Wednesday. Samples from both have been collected and sent for examination to confirm Nipah infection.
Separately, two other nurses who previously tested positive for Nipah virus are in extremely critical condition, remaining in a coma and admitted to the ICCU at Barasat Hospital. A resident medical officer at Barasat hospital, who had contact with these nurses, showed symptoms but tested negative for Nipah.
