NIMHANS has introduced a vital lay responder care module to bolster immediate emergency response for road traffic accident victims. This initiative is designed to equip ordinary citizens with crucial life-saving skills, thereby addressing a critical gap in pre-hospital care.
The comprehensive training covers essential techniques such as scene safety, rapid assessment, hands-only CPR, bleeding control, and basic fracture management. This program aims to significantly reduce fatalities by providing timely assistance before victims can reach professional medical facilities. Experts emphasize that a substantial number of road crash deaths occur during this critical window.
The project also includes a dedicated website and volunteer identity cards to support trained responders. To date, over 900 individuals, including 110 police personnel, have undergone this training. The program is set to scale up to five districts in Karnataka, with plans for further expansion to district levels.
This initiative is a proactive step towards strengthening community-based emergency response systems. By empowering lay responders, NIMHANS seeks to contribute to national efforts in curbing road traffic injuries and fatalities, particularly among young people who are disproportionately affected.
