Night Light May Harm Heart Health
15 Sep
Summary
- Low-level light exposure at night raises cardiovascular disease risk.
- More than 3 lux of light significantly increases risks of heart issues.
- Poor sleep quality from light impairs body restoration and immunity.

A recent study from Tulane University suggests that sleeping with any level of light exposure could elevate the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Researchers discovered that light levels exceeding 3 lux, comparable to moonlight, are associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing atrial fibrillation, heart attack, stroke, and even cardiovascular death.
Sleep expert Chelsie Rohrscheib explained that light influences the body's natural circadian rhythm by suppressing melatonin production, a hormone crucial for regulating sleep. When bedrooms are exposed to light pollution, the brain may produce less melatonin, negatively impacting sleep quality.
This chronic reduction in sleep quality affects vital bodily functions, including restoration, immune response, and cognitive processes. Ashley Curtis, a sleep researcher, noted that impaired sleep can also affect the gut microbiome and has substantial long-term health implications.
Certain demographics, such as shift workers, children, older adults, and individuals with insomnia, may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of nighttime light. While warmer, dimmer lights pose less of a threat, minimizing light exposure during sleep is recommended for optimal cardiovascular and overall health.
