Nicotine Pouches Surge in Popularity Across US
29 Oct
Summary
- Over 10% of Americans have tried a nicotine pouch.
- Nicotine pouch use tripled among tobacco users since 2021.
- Young adults and current tobacco users are primary adopters.
Nicotine pouches have transitioned from a niche product to a mainstream option for U.S. adult tobacco users, according to recent research. Over 10% of Americans have now tried these non-tobacco products, which deliver nicotine through a pouch placed between the lip and gum.
The use of nicotine pouches among individuals who already consume tobacco products has seen a dramatic rise. In 2024, approximately 1 in 10 tobacco users reported using nicotine pouches, a significant jump from just 3% in 2021. This trend is especially concerning for young adults, as their brains are still developing until age 25, making them more vulnerable to nicotine addiction.
Researchers analyzed data from nearly 4,800 individuals surveyed in 2021 and 2024. The findings indicate a growing preference for nicotine pouches as an alternative, with almost one-third of tobacco users having tried them at least once. The tobacco industry's strategic introduction of new products like these highlights the ongoing need for public health officials to monitor evolving nicotine consumption patterns.
