AI Tool Optimizes NHS Weight-Loss Drug Access
30 Apr
Summary
- New AI tool, Obscore, identifies high-risk individuals for weight-loss drugs.
- It uses 20 health, lifestyle, and demographic features to predict risks.
- Obscore aims for rational resource allocation within the NHS.
Researchers have developed an artificial intelligence tool, named Obscore, designed to enhance the prioritization of patients for limited weight-loss medications within the NHS. The tool leverages interpretable machine learning applied to data from nearly 200,000 participants in the UK Biobank project.
Obscore analyzes 20 key health, lifestyle, and demographic features, such as age, sex, and cholesterol levels, to predict a person's 10-year risk for 18 different obesity-related complications. This allows for a more personalized risk assessment than current methods, which primarily rely on high BMI and existing health issues.
The AI tool categorizes participants into five risk levels for various conditions, revealing that individuals with the same BMI can have vastly different risk profiles. This finding supports its utility in informing strategies for allocating weight-loss interventions, potentially identifying individuals who might be overlooked by BMI-only assessments.
While Obscore shows promise for more rational resource allocation, experts note that further validation and development are needed. Some metrics used by the tool are not routinely available in the NHS, and existing risk scores for certain conditions are already robust. Nevertheless, the work represents a significant step towards a more holistic approach to obesity-related risk prediction.
