Summary
- Prostate cancer patients to get video calls with consultants and DIY home blood tests
- NHS plans aim to catch tumors earlier for easier, cheaper treatment and higher survival
- New digital tools allow remote monitoring and virtual appointments to fit around men's lives

In a major push to enhance prostate cancer care, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) is set to offer video consultations with specialists and DIY home blood tests to patients. These new initiatives, part of the government's forthcoming Men's Health Strategy, aim to make it simpler for men to access care without disrupting their work and personal commitments.
The goal is to catch prostate tumors in their early stages, when they are more treatable and survival rates are higher. Patients will be able to order regular PSA blood tests through the NHS App for delivery to their homes, taking and returning the samples at their convenience. Medics will then analyze the results for any signs that the cancer may be progressing or returning after treatment.
Additionally, the NHS App will be upgraded to allow prostate cancer patients to message specialists for advice or book follow-up appointments as needed. This could accelerate diagnosis and treatment, as men found to have elevated PSA levels can also access virtual consultations. Charities have described the changes as "very encouraging" and expect them to make a "meaningful difference" for thousands of men.
The NHS is also exploring the use of AI technology to assist radiologists in detecting clinically significant prostate cancer from MRI scans, further streamlining the diagnostic process. These digital innovations come as the government considers the findings of a major study that found screening men for prostate cancer can reduce their risk of dying from the disease by 13%.
