An NHS mental health trust has been awarded a significant grant of over £45,000 to implement a new initiative focused on helping inpatients cease smoking. Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust plans to utilize this funding to provide practical support to approximately 1,200 adult and older adult inpatients across its wards within the upcoming year.
The trust intends to offer access to vapes, positioning them as a secure alternative to traditional tobacco products. This strategy aims to assist patients in managing their nicotine cravings while admitted, offering a viable pathway toward permanent cessation.
National data highlights that individuals with mental health conditions are twice as prone to smoking, often leading to increased dependence and poorer long-term health. Recognizing this, the trust is enhancing its approach through the Government's Swap to Stop scheme and local Stop Smoking Services.
This grant expands access to vaping products and consistent support, crucial for reducing smoking-related harm. It is anticipated to improve patient recovery outcomes and foster a healthier environment for everyone within the trust's facilities.
Stephen Adeniyi, the trust's tobacco dependence treatment programme lead, emphasized the achievement in securing this funding, stating it will empower more patients to begin their smoke-free journey during their hospital stay and contribute to better health and wellbeing in Black Country communities.
