NHS Trust Rises from Ranks to Become Most Improved
11 Jun
Summary
- North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust improved 10 places.
- Planned care, diagnostics, and referral pathways strengthened.
- £4m investment targets urgent and emergency care improvements.

The North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust (NCIC) has achieved a notable turnaround, becoming the most improved trust in its region. Previously ranking 130th out of 134 trusts in England and placed in an intensive recovery scheme due to deep-rooted challenges, NCIC has now risen 10 places to 120th.
This progress is attributed to strengthened performance in planned care, diagnostics, and referral to treatment pathways. While celebrating these improvements, NCIC chief executive Trudie Davies acknowledged that further work is needed, particularly in A&E and urgent treatment centres, which continue to manage around 11,000 attendances monthly with associated long waits.
A £4 million investment has been allocated to urgent and emergency care. The opening of a new urgent treatment centre in Carlisle is also anticipated to drive further improvements in these critical areas. Davies emphasized that the progress reflects the hard work of staff and is about enhancing the quality of care for all patients.
