- Loss compounds trauma for families already affected by care failures.
A significant data breach at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has resulted in the loss of 215,000 maternal health records. The incident, which occurred between September 2011 and November 2022, involved the overwriting of historical data during routine IT operations. Although the information has since been restored, the trust cannot recover logs of who accessed or amended these records during the affected period. Chief executive Anthony May has stated he is "ashamed and embarrassed" by the repeated data handling issues at the trust. This situation exacerbates the trauma for families who have already endured suffering due to "deeply embedded systemic failures" in maternity services, as highlighted by the recent Ockenden review. The trust has faced previous data-related issues, including a suspected intentional deletion of a file containing hundreds of maternity cases last year.
