Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS foundation trust has been fined £300,000 for failing to provide safe care, following the death of Chris Elliot. Mr. Elliot, 59, died on August 23, 2022, from pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria exposure. The bacteria were detected on a shower head in his isolation room at Cheltenham General Hospital on August 1, 2022, but no action was taken. The trust's oversight of its subsidiary company, Gloucestershire Managed Services (GMS), was insufficient, and its water safety group failed to meet for nine months. Mr. Elliot, undergoing chemotherapy for leukaemia, was admitted on August 9, 2022, and allocated the room with the contaminated shower, leading to his fatal infection. His widow, Victoria Elliot, condemned the trust's "arrogance, incompetence and a cavalier attitude" and described the fine as "derisory."
