Rehab Centre Closure Sparks Outcry
18 Mar
Summary
- Primrose Lodge rehabilitation centre is closing down.
- The NHS trust is shifting to a community-focused model.
- Fewer rehabilitation beds will be available locally.

A regional rehabilitation and recovery centre, Primrose Lodge in Chester-le-Street, is scheduled to close. The Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS Trust (TEWV) is implementing a shift towards a "community-focused" model, which will consolidate services at a site in Stockton. This transition will result in a reduction of rehabilitation beds in the area, decreasing from 35 to 20.
TEWV states that this change aims to "enhance patient outcomes, improve service efficiency and ensure financial sustainability." However, local officials and residents have voiced concerns regarding the perceived lack of public communication and the increased travel distances to the new facility in Stockton. Safety and accessibility issues at the current Primrose Lodge site, including a lack of en suite facilities, have also been cited as factors in the decision.
The trust's director of operations and transformation acknowledged that some individuals may face longer travel distances but emphasized the improved environment and sustainable workforce at the Stockton location. Concerns remain about the security and future use of the former Primrose Lodge building.
