New Blood Test Spots Multiple Cancers Early
4 Nov
Summary
- Trial recruits 20,000 patients for multi-cancer blood test.
- Test detects DNA and proteins shed by tumours in blood.
- Aims to catch cancers like prostate, ovarian, and bowel early.

A significant new trial, named STRIDE-RCT, is launching across the UK to evaluate a revolutionary blood test designed to detect numerous types of cancer. This initiative will involve 20,000 patients from 200 general practitioner surgeries. The test focuses on identifying prostate, ovarian, bowel, pancreatic, stomach, liver, and other abdominal cancers, which are often diagnosed late due to vague symptoms.
The blood test examines DNA shed by tumours and specific proteins circulating in the bloodstream. Patients over 45 experiencing common symptoms such as bloating or stomach cramps will be offered this screening. Health Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted the trial's potential to save lives by enabling earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment. Professor Peter Johnson, NHS England's director for cancer, noted that this trial represents a key step in a 'revolution in cancer diagnosis'.
This world-first trial will assess tests from three companies, which use artificial intelligence to analyze samples and determine the cancer's origin. The findings will help determine if these blood tests can be rolled out nationwide to support GPs in identifying patients needing prompt investigation. The trial aims to improve survival rates, as early-stage diagnoses significantly increase treatment success.
