NHS Staff Get Body Cams to Fight Abuse
5 Mar
Summary
- Body-worn cameras are being issued to frontline NHS staff.
- Cameras aim to prevent abuse and aid in prosecuting offenders.
- Footage provides clear, unbiased accounts for investigations.

Frontline staff at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust are now being equipped with body-worn cameras to address incidents of violence and aggression. These devices are intended to help manage threatening situations safely and appropriately. The cameras, also being deployed at Royal Oldham, Rochdale Infirmary, and Salford Royal, are activated only when a worker feels threatened, after informing the patient or visitor.
Once switched on, the cameras record both video and audio, creating an unbiased account of events. This footage can support investigations, including criminal and civil court actions, and act as a deterrent. The Trust emphasizes that while it understands hospital stays can be anxious, abuse of staff is unacceptable and that the safety and wellbeing of employees, patients, and visitors remain a top priority. The initiative aims to ensure emergency workers can perform their duties without fear of assault.
