NHS Scan Costs Skyrocket Amid Staffing Crisis
25 May
Summary
- NHS spending on private scan analysis doubled in five years.
- Private firms often provide lower-quality reports, requiring re-checks.
- Radiologists urge more training roles to combat outsourcing reliance.

Spending on private firms to interpret diagnostic scans within the NHS has "spiralled out of control," reaching a record £241 million last year. This figure represents a doubling from £120 million five years prior and a 12% increase from the previous year's £216 million. The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) attributes this financial "hemorrhage" to a critical shortage of trained radiologists within NHS hospitals. This understaffing leaves hospitals with insufficient capacity to analyze scans promptly, necessitating outsourcing to non-NHS health companies.
Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding the quality of these outsourced reports. A significant majority of NHS radiology department heads expressed serious reservations, with 86% believing privatization leads to lower-quality results. Consequently, 90% reported that NHS radiologists must double-check outsourced analyses, questioning the value of this arrangement. Dr. Stephen Harden, president of the RCR, emphasized that while outsourcing can manage short-term backlogs, it is not a sustainable solution to workforce shortages and urges ministers to invest in more training roles.
