Summary
- Nearly 1,000 patients and families received support in the first year.
- Volunteers provide companionship to patients in their final days.
- The service aims to combat loneliness experienced by terminal patients.

In its first year, a hospital's end-of-life volunteer service, A Friend In Need, has provided crucial support to nearly 1,000 patients and their families. This collaborative project offers companionship to patients in their final days and hours.
Through almost 900 bedside visits, volunteers have supported 383 patients and 611 family members. The service partners the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust with the Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals and the Anne Robson Trust. Volunteers emphasize ensuring patients know they have mattered.
Research indicates up to 92% of terminal patients experience loneliness. Professor Ollie Minton highlighted the volunteers' role in providing dignity and compassion when it is most needed. The success of this Brighton model is prompting its expansion to other hospitals within the trust.
