The UK's National Health Service (NHS) is exploring innovative strategies to enhance patient care and reduce waiting times through "high-efficiency weeks." This initiative, also referred to as optimization or 'perfect' weeks, focuses on rapidly increasing the volume of planned operations within hospitals.
Hospital staff at Heatherwood Hospital, near Ascot in Berkshire, recently participated in such a week, which had been in planning for two months. Orthopaedic surgeon Rakesh Kucheria highlighted the objective: to perform 10 to 15 percent more procedures by fully utilizing all hospital facilities, including theatres, outpatient rooms, and imaging services like X-ray and MRI scans.
