Dental Crisis: Patients Face Painful Wait for NHS Care
24 Apr
Summary
- Many Welsh patients endure pain while waiting for NHS dental appointments.
- Dental practices are returning NHS contracts due to new contract changes.
- Patients cannot afford private care and struggle with anxiety.

Llinos Hughes, from Anglesey, has resorted to gluing her own dentures as she endures constant pain while waiting for an NHS dentist. Her situation underscores the growing crisis in NHS dentistry across Wales, with recent contract changes prompting several practices to abandon NHS services for private care.
The changes, introduced on April 1, 2026, are described by the Welsh government as the most significant in two decades. However, the British Dental Association (BDA) expressed concerns that these new contracts are untested and poorly communicated, leading to a substantial number of contract returns.
Data indicates a concerning drop in NHS dental care access since 2020. In Wales, approximately 40% of the adult population accessed NHS dental care in 2026, mirroring England's figures, while Scotland reports 97%. For children, 48% received NHS treatment in Wales, compared to 57% in England and 90% in Scotland.
Patients like Hannah McCluskay face extensive costs, with an estimated £6000 for private treatment for issues that could have been prevented with earlier, regular check-ups. The BDA warns that these changes may lead to less frequent appointments for some patients, with wait times for routine check-ups potentially reaching 18 to 24 months. Some patients may also see increased costs for NHS treatments.
Political parties have outlined various approaches to address the crisis. Parties like the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Welsh Conservatives, Reform UK, Green Party, Welsh Labour, and Plaid Cymru have proposed boosting funding, setting targets to cut waiting lists, improving retention, recruiting more dentists, and establishing new dental schools to improve access and long-term provision.
