NHS CDC Slashes Scan Wait Times Dramatically
7 Mar
Summary
- Community Diagnostic Centre reduces waits to 48 hours.
- Groundbreaking cancer trial offers faster diagnosis.
- Over 292,000 procedures completed since opening.

The Hollinswood House Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), which opened in October 2023, is significantly reducing NHS waiting times by focusing on planned, non-emergency procedures. This facility has already handled 292,293 procedures, including CT scans, MRIs, and blood tests, easing the burden on main hospital sites. Radiographers report that patients are now scanned much faster, with same-day appointments available for chest X-rays when referred by GPs.
The phlebotomy department alone processes up to 400 blood tests daily, with results available within 48 hours, a stark contrast to the previous three-to-four-week wait. This improved efficiency is highly appreciated by patients who find the CDC convenient with ample parking, unlike the congested main hospitals.
A pioneering cancer trial, Triomic, launched in December 2024, is also underway on the third floor. This trial uses rectal mucus samples for early colorectal cancer detection, aiming to reduce the need for invasive colonoscopies. Approximately 2,600 patients in Shropshire have participated so far, and the new clinic rooms enable 150 appointments weekly. This development promises to provide patients with answers about potential cancer much faster, potentially within a week of GP referral.
