Treatments for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare muscle-wasting condition, have been approved for routine and widespread use on the NHS in England. This development offers a significant breakthrough for children diagnosed with the genetic condition, which affects breathing, swallowing, and movement. Nusinersen, administered via injection, and risdiplam, an oral treatment, have demonstrated substantial, life-changing benefits.
For families like Ezra's, from Ramsgate in Kent, these drugs represent a monumental shift. Ezra began treatment at five months old through an early access program. His mother shared that starting mainstream school, a milestone once considered unreachable, is now a reality. Previously, his diagnosis in 2016 came with a life expectancy of under two years, making a hopeful future seem distant.
NHS England reports that these treatments have already helped 73 babies with SMA survive beyond the age of five. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) finalized guidance stating the drugs can enhance survival rates, decelerate disease progression, and support independence. Around 70 babies are born with SMA annually in the UK, with approximately 1,150 individuals currently living with the condition in England.
