11 Jun
Summary
- £20 million funding will equip all England NHS trusts with AI X-ray analysis by 2029.
- AI technology helps radiologists analyze chest X-rays in an average of four days.
- Over four million patients have already received faster lung cancer diagnoses via AI.

The UK government has allocated £20 million to expand the use of AI in analyzing chest X-rays across all NHS trusts in England by 2029. This initiative aims to accelerate diagnoses and enhance patient care. Currently, approximately half of NHS trusts utilize this technology.
A new £8 million pilot program will also be launched across 13 NHS organizations. This pilot will explore how AI can expedite treatment for conditions such as heart failure, strokes, and lung cancer.
AI in chest X-ray analysis functions as an additional resource for radiologists. Data from 25 trusts indicate that AI assists in analyzing scans within an average of four days, a notable improvement from previous timelines.
Health and Social Care Secretary James Murray highlighted that these AI tools are already aiding in earlier cancer diagnoses and faster access to life-saving treatment. He emphasized that this national rollout signifies a crucial step in modernizing the NHS, moving from analogue to digital practices.
Minister for digital government, Ian Murray, stated that AI is actively saving lives within the NHS. He pointed out that a four-day reduction in diagnostic waiting times provides immense relief and quicker access to treatment or reassurance for patients.
Experts from organizations like the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and Cancer Research UK have welcomed the investment, stressing the importance of broader implementation to ensure widespread patient benefit. The Royal College of Radiologists affirmed that AI will support radiologists, enhancing their effectiveness and efficiency without replacing expert clinical judgment.
