NHS Admin Crisis: Patients Drowning in Bureaucracy
16 Apr
Summary
- Two-thirds of patients faced NHS administrative problems last year.
- Admin issues include chasing results and missed appointment updates.
- Patient experiences with NHS communication have worsened since 2024.

A significant majority of patients, 66 percent, have experienced at least one administrative issue with the NHS in the past year. This finding comes from a new report by the King's Fund, Healthwatch, and National Voices, highlighting a pervasive "admin doom loop."
Patients reported difficulties such as chasing test results, receiving appointment reminders after the scheduled date, lack of communication regarding waiting times, and receiving inaccurate information. These issues have led to a decline in general perceptions of NHS administrative and communication effectiveness compared to previous years.
The report indicated that less than half of those surveyed believe the NHS effectively communicates about appointments and test results, with a notable increase in negative feedback. Specifically, the percentage viewing NHS communication as "poor" has risen.
These administrative failings disproportionately affect individuals with long-term health conditions, carers, and those with lower incomes. Many patients feel these issues lead to wasted NHS money, staff time, and their own time, with some patients experiencing significant disruptions to their work and income.
Experts are calling for NHS administration to be a national priority, advocating for clear standards and improved digital tools that are intuitive and accessible. The aim is to ensure processes function more effectively for patients, preventing further disengagement with healthcare services.
