A 13-year-old boy, Josiah Michael Dwinell, died by suicide on March 12th after experiencing persistent bullying at school. His aunt shared that Josiah was struggling after his mother's death five years prior, feeling unsupported by those outside his immediate home. Despite seeking help at hospitals for his declining mental health, the bullying continued.
Josiah reportedly jumped from a bridge into the freezing Cold River in Alstead, New Hampshire. He did not know how to swim. First responders arrived quickly, but were unable to save him. The New Hampshire State Police are investigating the incident.
The Alstead community and Fall Mountain Regional School District are mourning Josiah's death. The school district has made counseling available to students and staff. A GoFundMe initiated by his family to cover funeral and medical expenses has surpassed its initial goal, raising over $23,000.
A candlelight vigil is scheduled to be held in Josiah's honor on March 29th. His family is using a teal and purple ribbon, representing suicide awareness, to encourage the message 'you are never alone.'
