In a heartbreaking incident, an expecting mother's newborn could not be saved at Khanna Civil Hospital due to alleged medical negligence. The events unfolded on Monday evening when Manpreet Kaur was brought to the hospital in labor.
Despite Manpreet receiving her routine check-ups and treatment at the civil hospital, the authorities there referred her to Patiala for the delivery. Her family alleged that the attending emergency doctor consulted the on-duty gynaecologist, Kavita Sharma, over the phone, who suggested the referral. However, the family did not agree to it, as Manpreet had been receiving care at the civil hospital throughout her pregnancy.
The situation turned tense, and a local leader intervened, prompting the senior medical officer, Dr. Maninder Singh Bhasin, to rush to the hospital. He personally ensured a C-section was performed, but the newborn was in critical condition, having ingested meconium in the womb. The baby girl was first referred to Patiala, and then to PGI Chandigarh, but tragically passed away en route due to a lack of ventilator support.
The family has alleged that the gynaecologist, Dr. Kavita Sharma, was absent from the hospital without informing her superiors, leading to the complications. A formal inquiry has been launched into her role, and the civil surgeon has demanded an explanation from her.
