Baby's Christmas Nightmare: RSV Scare Lands Tot in Hospital

A mother has shared her profound fear after her four-month-old son, Jaxx, was hospitalized with a severe respiratory virus just before Christmas last year. The baby rapidly deteriorated, exhibiting alarming symptoms including significant chest retractions with each breath. The family quickly contacted NHS 111, leading to an emergency ambulance transfer to St Helier hospital in South London.

Upon diagnosis with RSV infection and bronchiolitis, Jaxx received critical treatment including oxygen therapy, antibiotics, and tube feeding. The uncertainty of spending Christmas in the hospital weighed heavily on the parents, who were also managing their two other daughters at home. They lauded the exceptional care from doctors and nurses, who provided both medical support for Jaxx and emotional reassurance for the parents.

Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Charity played a vital role in mitigating the holiday stress, organizing festive decorations and entertainment, including a visit from Fulham FC players. This intervention brought much-needed joy and distraction to the children and families. After five days, Jaxx was discharged, allowing the family to celebrate Christmas together, profoundly grateful for the charity's support in making a frightening experience more bearable.
