Newborn dies after unattended delivery on hospital floor

A newborn tragically died on Tuesday at the District Government Hospital in Haveri, Karnataka, after its mother delivered unattended on the floor. The family claims the incident was a result of medical negligence, as overcrowding in the labor ward allegedly prevented the mother from receiving a bed.

Roopa Girish Karabannanavar, 30, was admitted with labor pains but, according to her relatives, was left to sit on the floor. While attempting to reach the toilet, she unexpectedly went into labor in the hospital pathway, leading to the fatal fall of the newborn. Family members expressed distress, stating that hospital staff appeared indifferent and engrossed in their mobile phones.

However, District Hospital Surgeon Dr P R Havanur stated that while an investigation is underway, there was no initial indication of medical negligence. He mentioned that the mother arrived with high blood pressure and that the fetus might have already been deceased before delivery. CCTV footage is being reviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry.
