Newborn dies after 'blue and floppy' delivery at home
21 Apr
Summary
- Baby was delivered 'blue and floppy' with midwives slow to react.
- Doctors found the newborn was starved of oxygen for several minutes.
- Mother was not fully consulted on risks for home VBAC delivery.

A devastating inquest has revealed that a newborn, Poppy Hope Lomas, died seven days after a planned home birth due to complications. Poppy was delivered 'blue and floppy,' a state described by her mother, Gemma Lomas, who recalls midwives being slow to respond with a sense of urgency.
Doctors later discovered Poppy had been deprived of oxygen for approximately seven to eight minutes. Her mother reported that the head midwife encouraged a vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) at home but failed to fully explain potential risks, making her feel the consultant's approval was merely a formality.
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists guidance suggests VBACs require a suitably equipped delivery suite and immediate caesarean resources. Poppy's condition was so severe that a consultant neonatologist described her brain scan as one of the worst he had seen. The inquest also heard that Ms. Lomas's concerns about pain from her previous C-section scar were dismissed by midwives.
Ms. Lomas expressed profound grief, noting that Poppy had been healthy throughout the pregnancy. The trauma is compounded by the birth occurring in their own home, a place intended for safety.
