Newborn Care Under Fire: Parents Refuse Vital Shots
21 Mar
Summary
- Refusals of vitamin K shots for newborns nearly doubled from 2017 to 2024.
- Parents declining vitamin K shots are more likely to refuse other newborn care.
- Doctors attribute rising skepticism to anti-science sentiment and medical mistrust.

Doctors are expressing growing concern over a recent surge in parents refusing essential preventive care for newborns, including vitamin K shots. This trend, observed across the nation, is linked to rising anti-science sentiments and general mistrust in medical guidance. A study analyzing over 5 million births found that vitamin K shot refusals nearly doubled between 2017 and 2024, increasing from 2.9% to 5.2%.
This skepticism extends beyond vitamin K, with parents who refuse it also showing a higher likelihood of declining hepatitis B vaccinations and preventative eye ointments for their newborns. Pediatricians highlight that this phenomenon is driven by misinformation spread online and a prevailing belief that natural approaches are always superior to medical interventions.
Vitamin K is crucial for newborns, as they are born with low levels and are vulnerable to bleeding, particularly in the brain. Before routine injections, about 1 in 60 babies suffered from vitamin K deficiency bleeding. Despite the rarity of this condition today, unvaccinated newborns are 81 times more likely to experience severe bleeding.
Doctors emphasize that addressing parental concerns with respect and education is key. They are investing time to explain the importance of these measures, noting that some parents agree to vitamin K shots upon learning they are not vaccines. Pediatricians remain dedicated to advocating for infant well-being despite these challenging conversations.
