Summary
- Two new daily oral GLP-1 weight-loss drugs approved by FDA.
- Pills offer lower cost and convenience over weekly injections.
- Eli Lilly's Foundayo and Novo Nordisk's pill now available.

The market for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs has expanded with the introduction of two new oral medications, offering a needle-free alternative to current injectables. Eli Lilly's Foundayo received FDA approval on April 1, 2026, following Novo Nordisk's approval for their pill in December 2025. These daily pills are designed for greater convenience, not requiring refrigeration and often coming at a lower price point than their injectable counterparts.
Foundayo began shipping on April 6, 2026, and is available through Amazon kiosks and directly from Lilly for cash-paying customers at $149 per month for the lowest dose. Clinical trials for Eli Lilly's pill showed an average weight loss of 7.8% to 12.4% over 72 weeks, while Novo Nordisk's trial reported an average of 14% weight loss over 64 weeks, with both trials including participants without type 2 diabetes.
Common side effects for both pills and injections include gastrointestinal issues like nausea and diarrhea. More serious, though rarer, side effects can involve pancreatitis or bowel obstruction. Many insurance plans do not cover GLP-1s for weight loss, leading to out-of-pocket expenses that can range from $140 to $300 per month for pills, compared to potentially over $1,200 for injections.
