Russian scientists have reportedly developed a vaccine effective against a new strain of the Ebola virus. The vaccine is said to potentially offer protection against the rare Bundibugyo strain.
The Bundibugyo strain is linked to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The World Health Organization has reported 220 suspected deaths due to this strain. As of May 17, 2026, the WHO declared the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Discussions concerning the vaccine's production and international collaboration took place with the World Health Organization. These meetings occurred during the 79th World Health Assembly, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 18-23, 2026. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or specific treatments available for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
