State Unveils First PET Scan Facility for Early Disease Detection
3 Apr
Summary
- First advanced PET scan facility launched in the government sector.
- PET scans detect diseases at metabolic and molecular levels early.
- ₹3,000 crore to be invested for healthcare technology upgrades.

A groundbreaking advancement in healthcare has been made with the inauguration of the state's first advanced Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan facility within the government sector. This facility promises to bring crucial diagnostic services closer to patients, eliminating the need for extensive travel.
The PET scan technology offers a significant advantage by enabling the early detection of diseases at their metabolic and molecular stages. Unlike traditional imaging methods that identify structural changes later, PET technology discerns physiological alterations at much earlier points, proving vital for cancer staging, treatment evaluation, and recurrence detection.
This initiative is part of a broader commitment to integrating high-end technologies into the health sector. The state government recently introduced a three Tesla MRI machine and plans to invest over ₹3,000 crore to enhance technology across all medical colleges and health institutions, aiming to provide accessible, world-class healthcare.
Additionally, ₹8 crore has been allocated for the establishment of a SPECT-CT scan machine at IGMC Shimla, further bolstering diagnostic capabilities within the state.
