Recent findings presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Annual Meeting in Milan highlight the effectiveness of orforglipron, a new daily oral medication for type 2 diabetes and chronic obesity. This treatment has demonstrated consistent body weight reduction in women across all life stages, proving equally effective before, during, and after menopause.
Obesity presents unique challenges for women, particularly with hormonal shifts during menopause that often accelerate weight gain. Orforglipron, developed by Eli Lilly, targets these issues as a small-molecule, non-peptide drug taken orally once a day, unlike existing injectable GLP-1 medications. Clinical trials ATTAIN-1 and ATTAIN-2 analyzed data from overweight participants, dividing them into pre-menopausal, peri-menopausal, and post-menopausal groups.
After 72 weeks, women taking orforglipron achieved up to a 14 percent reduction in body weight, with results showing minimal variation between the menopausal stages. This suggests the medication effectively counteracts metabolic slowdowns associated with lower estrogen levels. Significant improvements were also observed in body composition, including waistline reductions of up to 12.5 centimeters.
Overall, up to 83 percent of participants on orforglipron lost 5 percent or more of their body weight, compared to 30 percent on placebo. The drug also helped a greater proportion of women achieve healthier waist-to-height ratios, presenting a practical, non-injectable option for long-term weight management.
