OB-GYN Group Issues New Vaccine Advice
11 Jun
Summary
- OB-GYN group released new vaccine guidelines.
- Guidelines differ from current U.S. government advice.
- COVID-19 vaccine recommendations are a major point of divergence.

The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) has released its own immunization schedule, offering new vaccine recommendations for pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding individuals. This move marks a departure from current U.S. government advice and aims to provide clear, evidence-based guidance amidst widespread vaccine misinformation.
The guidelines align with previous recommendations from the CDC, preceding recent changes made during the Trump administration. ACOG's decision to create an independent schedule stemmed from its withdrawal from a CDC advisory committee earlier this year due to these changes, which have faced legal challenges.
Four immunizations are routinely recommended during pregnancy, with others like pneumococcal and hepatitis vaccines suggested for those with specific risk factors. Additionally, vaccines for HPV, MMR, and chickenpox are advised before pregnancy or postpartum. A significant point of divergence is the COVID-19 vaccine, with recent government advice questioning its recommendation for healthy pregnant women and children.
This new schedule has garnered endorsement from 13 other professional and medical societies. Other organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, have also issued vaccine schedules distinct from the CDC's. Experts emphasize the critical need for accurate, scientifically based information to counter hesitancy fueled by social media and online research.
