New Frailty Model Offers Hope for Seniors
30 Oct
Summary
- A new home-based frailty management model has been developed.
- The model includes nutrition, exercise, and mental health guidance.
- It aims to prevent frailty progression in older adults.
Researchers at ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI) in Kolkata have pioneered a home-based frailty management model. Frailty, an age-associated decline impacting physiological reserves, affects a significant portion of the elderly population, leading to reduced strength and poorer quality of life.
The newly developed model incorporates India-specific nutritional guidelines, home-based exercises including resistance and balance training, and a mental health promotion module. These components are designed for normal, pre-frail, and frail older adults, with separate considerations for males and females.
This initiative aims to prevent frailty progression and support existing frail individuals. The research team is also developing user-friendly comic books and videos to enhance awareness and plans to share these resources online.
