The US Food and Drug Administration has approved updated COVID-19 vaccines for widespread use. Pfizer and BioNTech received approval for their mRNA vaccine targeting the LP.8.1 strain for adults 65 and older, and individuals aged 5 through 64 with conditions increasing their risk for severe illness.
Moderna's Spikevax and mNexspike vaccines, which target the XFG subvariant of the JN.1 strain, were also approved. These are recommended for individuals aged 6 months through 64 with underlying conditions and anyone 65 and older. Nuvaxovid, the sole protein-based vaccine, targets the JN.1 strain and is approved for those 65 and older and individuals aged 12 through 64 with underlying health issues.
Health conditions that increase risk include asthma, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. While current COVID-19 case numbers are low, test positivity rates have approached 5%. Experts anticipate these updated vaccines will be available at pharmacies and doctors' offices starting in September, with most medical organizations recommending their administration.
