New Covid Symptoms Emerge: Sore Throats and Headaches Dominate
8 Oct
Summary
- Sore throats and headaches are now common Covid complaints.
- Taste or smell loss is no longer a definitive Covid indicator.
- Autumn Covid vaccinations are more targeted this year.

General practitioners are reporting a notable change in the primary symptoms presented by patients with Covid-19. Recent consultations indicate that sore throats, headaches, runny noses, and fatigue are now more frequently observed. This contrasts with earlier presentations where a loss of taste or smell was a more definitive sign of infection. Doctors caution that altered taste or smell should not automatically confirm a Covid-19 diagnosis. Furthermore, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, while possible with Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses, are not typically the main indicators of a common cold.
When vomiting and diarrhea are the predominant issues, medical professionals suggest considering other infections, such as norovirus, rather than immediately assuming it is flu or Covid-19. This autumn, the NHS vaccination program in England has been updated for eligibility. The targeted approach includes adults aged 75 and older, care home residents, and individuals aged six months and older who are immunosuppressed, making these groups a priority for flu and Covid vaccinations.
