New Covid Variant 'Cicada' Spreads Fast, Experts Warn

A new Covid-19 variant, designated BA.3.2 and nicknamed 'Cicada,' is reportedly set to become dominant in Britain, according to health officials. This variant appears to spread faster than previous strains and is notable for its approximately 75 mutations that help it evade immunity.

Emerging evidence is being closely monitored, with some experts suggesting a potential for disproportionate effects on children. While current vaccines might offer reduced efficacy against Cicada, they remain crucial in preventing severe disease. Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea and diarrhea, are increasingly being reported as common manifestations of this variant.

The Cicada variant, a descendant of Omicron, was first detected in South Africa in 2024 before becoming dormant and then resurfacing. Wastewater monitoring in the US indicates its presence across 29 states, with health authorities like the CDC actively tracking its evolving symptom profile.
