Summary
- Enlicitide pill shows greatest LDL cholesterol reduction for an oral drug.
- The medication mimics injectable treatments in an easy-to-take tablet form.
- Nearly 3,000 participants in the trial struggled with high LDL levels.

A new oral medication, enlicitide, has achieved unprecedented results in a large phase three trial, marking the most significant drop in LDL cholesterol ever recorded with an oral drug. This development offers a promising alternative to existing treatments.
The medication functions similarly to potent cholesterol-lowering injections, but in an easily administered tablet form. Researchers believe enlicitide could greatly simplify treatment for patients who find it difficult to reach their cholesterol targets, even with high-dose statin therapy.
According to The New England Journal of Medicine, the trial included nearly 3,000 participants. A substantial portion of these individuals were already using statins, yet continued to exhibit elevated LDL cholesterol levels. These high levels are concerning as LDL cholesterol gradually accumulates in arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
