New Heart Guidelines: Start Cholesterol Checks at 30!
24 Mar
Summary
- Cholesterol screening now recommended for Americans as young as 30.
- All children by age 10 should be tested for LDL cholesterol levels.
- Guidelines aim to reduce heart disease deaths by half globally.

New guidelines from the American College of Cardiology now recommend that Americans begin cholesterol screenings at age 30. This update aims to reduce heart disease deaths, which are a significant global concern. The recommendations also emphasize that all children should be tested for LDL cholesterol by age 10 to identify genetic predispositions and the need for early intervention.
Previously updated in 2018, the guidelines now provide more specific targets based on individual risk factors for heart attack and stroke. For individuals over 30 with at least a 10 percent risk, LDL cholesterol levels should be below 70 mg/dL. Those with a history of cardiac events or peripheral artery disease should aim for below 55 mg/dL. Doctors believe these changes could potentially halve heart attack and stroke rates.
High LDL cholesterol, defined as 240 mg/dL or above, contributes to plaque buildup in arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of fatal events. Lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, not smoking, and a balanced diet rich in healthy fats are crucial. Medication is also recommended for eligible individuals, though current adherence rates are low.
