New Guidelines: Start Cholesterol Checks at Age 10
24 Mar
Summary
- Cholesterol screening is now recommended for children as young as 10.
- Adults aged 30 and over with a 10% risk should aim for LDL below 70mg/dL.
- New guidelines aim to halve heart attack and stroke rates with early intervention.

Leading cardiologists have issued updated guidelines, advocating for cholesterol screenings to begin as early as age 10. This initiative targets the identification of genetic risks and the need for cholesterol-lowering medication in children. The recommendations also urge younger adults, starting at age 30, to take proactive steps regarding their cholesterol levels.
For individuals over 30 with a calculated 10% risk of heart attack or stroke in the next decade, maintaining LDL cholesterol below 70 milligrams per deciliter is advised. Those with pre-existing cardiac events or peripheral artery disease should aim for levels below 55 mg/dL. Experts believe these updated guidelines could drastically cut heart attack and stroke rates, potentially by half, if embraced by the public, especially younger generations.
