15 Feb
Summary
- New clinic combats rising childhood obesity and growth issues.
- 20-25% of Indian urban children are overweight or obese.
- Early intervention prevents long-term health complications.

Medicover Women and Child Hospitals in Hyderabad has launched a specialized Growth and Childhood Obesity Clinic. This new initiative brings together pediatric and endocrine specialists to focus on the early detection, prevention, and management of childhood obesity and growth-related issues.
Experts highlighted that approximately 20 to 25% of school-going children in Indian cities are experiencing overweight or obesity. Concurrently, a significant portion of children exhibit stunted growth due to nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or sedentary lifestyles. Early-onset obesity poses risks for future metabolic, cardiovascular, and psychosocial health complications.
Usha Rani T, President-Elect of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) Twin Cities chapter, noted the concerning trend of children growing heavier but not taller. She emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between pediatricians, parents, and schools to foster healthy habits from a young age and avert future diseases.
