The New Brunswick government has announced a significant three-year strategic plan designed to reduce dementia risks and improve care for individuals affected by conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
This pioneering provincial plan, shaped by input from over 1,700 individuals including patients, care partners, and healthcare professionals, allocates $1 million to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick. The funding will support existing programs and introduce new educational initiatives, focusing on public awareness, timely diagnosis, and robust support systems for patients and their families.
The strategy emphasizes accessible, affordable, and collaborative care, particularly for rural residents, ensuring a high quality of life. Approximately 12,000 New Brunswickers are estimated to have a dementia diagnosis, impacting an additional four to six people each. The plan aims to enable individuals to live with dignity in their communities for longer periods, addressing challenges such as long nursing home waitlists and lack of awareness about respite care.
