NB Doctors Surge: 179 New Physicians Hired Since 2025
20 Oct
Summary
- 179 net new doctors joined New Brunswick since January 2025.
- Over 900 nurses, including RNs and LPNs, were recruited.
- 22 collaborative care clinics aim to attach 29,500 residents.

Since the beginning of 2025, New Brunswick has welcomed 179 net new doctors, marking the largest increase in the province's history. Among these new physicians, 72 specialize in family medicine, while 107 are in other fields like psychiatry and pediatrics. This expansion is part of a broader healthcare initiative that also saw the recruitment of 515 new registered nurses and 402 new licensed practical nurses from January 2025 to August 2026.
The Susan Holt government has made a substantial investment in collaborative care models, announcing 22 such clinics so far. These clinics are projected to connect 29,500 New Brunswickers with a primary care provider, with a goal of reaching 30 clinics by 2027. This strategy has reportedly contributed to a 20% decrease in non-urgent emergency room visits since early 2025. Despite these gains, 262,758 residents still lack a family doctor as of last month, while 619,354 are attached to a primary care provider.
