Nestle Recalls Infant Formula Over Toxin Fears
7 Jan
Summary
- Nestle recalls baby formula batches in Europe due to toxin.
- Contamination risk involves a toxin causing nausea and vomiting.
- Recall impacts brands like SMA, BEBA, and NAN formulas.

Nestle has initiated a recall of several batches of its infant nutrition products, including popular brands like SMA, BEBA, and NAN formulas. This action, primarily affecting Europe, Turkey, and Argentina, is a response to the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting. The company stressed that no illnesses have been confirmed, but the recall was prompted after a quality issue was detected in a key ingredient from a leading supplier.
The recall, which began on a smaller scale in December and has now expanded, impacts over 800 products from more than 10 Nestle factories, potentially marking the largest recall in the company's history. Nestle has identified affected batch numbers and is actively working to minimize supply disruptions while also activating alternative suppliers for the contaminated raw material, arachidonic acid oil.
Food safety authorities noted that the cereulide toxin is unlikely to be deactivated by cooking. This situation adds pressure on Nestle's new CEO, Philipp Navratil, as the company seeks to revive growth. Infant formula represents a significant part of Nestle's Nutrition and Health Science division, which contributed substantially to its overall sales in 2024.
