A significant advancement in treating severe allergic reactions has been achieved in the UK with the MHRA's approval of a new 1mg dose of ALK-Abelló's EURneffy adrenaline nasal spray. This approval marks a crucial step towards providing younger children, specifically those aged 4 years and over weighing between 15kg and 30kg, with a needle-free alternative for anaphylaxis treatment. Previously, the only available product was a 2mg dose approved in July 2025 for adults and children aged 10 and above weighing 30kg or more.
Anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction, affects an estimated 761 out of every 100,000 children in Europe annually, with food allergies being the primary cause in over two-thirds of cases. While injectable products like EpiPen have been the standard treatment, EURneffy's needle-free approach is designed to circumvent issues such as needle aversion and delayed administration. Flora Beiche-Scholz of ALK stated that EURneffy aims to remove these barriers, potentially transforming care for children with severe allergies.
ALK secured European and Canadian rights to EURneffy from ARS Pharmaceuticals in November 2025. ARS retains US marketing rights, where the spray is branded as Neffy and also saw its paediatric label widened by the FDA in March 2026. Neffy achieved $20.3m in sales for the full year 2025 and is projected to reach $1bn globally by 2032.
