North Carolina has confirmed 307 cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic intestinal illness, along with 13 hospitalizations between May 1 and July 14, 2026. The state's health department is investigating potential sources of exposure, with parsley, cilantro, and lettuce identified as the produce most frequently linked to these infections. These cases are believed to be distinct from other state outbreaks.Nationwide, over 4,000 cyclosporiasis cases have been reported. While 94 hospitalizations have occurred, no deaths have been confirmed by the CDC. Previous outbreaks in other states have been linked to shredded lettuce served at Taco Bell, originating from a single supplier in Mexico. Generally, cyclosporiasis outbreaks in the U.S. since the mid-1990s have been associated with fresh produce like raspberries, basil, and various leafy greens. The parasite spreads through contaminated food or water and direct person-to-person transmission is considered unlikely. Taylor Farms has recalled several lettuce products as part of the ongoing investigation.
