Mystery Condition Leaves Woman Paralyzed, In Agony
16 Jun
Summary
- Woman faced paralysis and extreme pain from a rare condition.
- Diagnosis of extrapulmonary sarcoidosis baffled medical experts.
- Life transformed from travel to limited mobility and daily care.

A 38-year-old woman's life was dramatically reshaped after suddenly losing movement in her limbs and developing lumps across her body due to a rare medical condition. Initially experiencing pain akin to severe gym soreness, her condition rapidly escalated to paralysis in both legs, her left arm, and neck.
Doctors were baffled by her symptoms, leading to extensive tests and a three-week hospital stay. She was eventually diagnosed with extrapulmonary sarcoidosis, a condition where inflamed tissue forms in organs but, in her case, did not affect the lungs. This diagnosis necessitated her return to the UK.
Now living in a bungalow with four daily carer visits, her mobility has improved, but she still relies on a wheelchair during painful flare-ups. Her life, once characterized by world travel, is now confined to a few rooms daily, leading to significant boredom and isolation.
Previously working in Magaluf, Mallorca, she had to abandon her career and accustomed lifestyle. The illness caused dangerously low levels of Vitamin B12, folic acid, potassium, and iron, with elevated inflammation markers. Doctors at Son Espasas University Hospital conducted numerous scans and tests, including brain and CT scans, before identifying the condition through a biopsy.
She returned to the UK in December 2025 and is awaiting medication previously prescribed in Spain. The condition is described as a once-in-a-lifetime illness that has completely transformed her daily existence.
